Gatehouse Media Editor Scott Smith attended a summer show and later wrote "All of a sudden, the time-honored trumpet was turned into something new, something bold, something brash. And something very hip. The only way I can describe it is that Johnny’s maroon trumpet comes across like a lead guitar driving a brand new electric sound. Johnny used the wah-wah and other effects Sunday only where needed, and when he did, they were none so subtle."

Author and contributor for The New England Jazz Alliance,  Peter DeVeber had this to say  "Johnny's original Boston (Hub of My Heart) swings out, man - swings out!  It's got that Frank Flavor it does.  And son, Johnny III's muted trumpet solo reaches for the sweets - bon, Johnny III, bon."

Boston Globe Correspondent, Bill Beuttler commented in a live performance review of The Johnny Souza Quintet at Ryles Jazz Club that "Boston (Hub of My Heart)" included a swinging trumpet solo by the leader's son, guest soloist Johnny Souza III."
